Resources to Help You Prepare for Next School Year

'Summer is a wonderful time to relax and recharge, but it can also be a great time to make a few simple plans for the next school year. One of the best ways to set your classroom up for success is to establish consistent routines. Super Teacher Worksheets has many different resources that can be easily incorporated into your daily routines. Below are four ideas to help review skills and reinforce learning, all while setting consistent expectations for your students.

Daily Math Review Worksheets - Math Buzz:

Daily Math Review (Math Buzz) worksheets provide students with daily practice opportunities that spiral through previously taught skills. Math Buzz is set up with four or five questions for students to answer each day of the week, depending on grade level. Print out a packet of five worksheets per week and have students keep them in their math folders. Math Buzz can serve as an easy way to get students started during math block. Give students the first five to ten minutes of math to answer the questions, and then you can go over it as a class. Alternatively, Math Buzz can be something students complete if they finish classwork early.

Daily Math Word Problems:

Word problems can be a tricky concept for students to master, and daily practice can help make them simpler. Try adding these Daily Word Problems into your math block. Similar to Math Buzz, Daily Word Problems are set up with one word problem per day in a packet of five. Print out the daily pages with space for students to show their work and solve the problem. Another option is to print out an alternate version of just the word problem to be displayed on the board for students to answer on a separate piece of paper. (If you have a limited print quota, this enlarged alternate version can also be printed five to a page!) Daily Word Problems are another great way to start math class. Or, add them to your math centers for students to complete independently. For students who struggle with word problems, you may wish to incorporate them into your math small groups.

Planning Tips:

  • Before school starts, print the first month of the Daily Buzz Packets, word problems, and spelling units, and organize them by week. Having these ready to go will make your preparation for the beginning of class periods effortless.

  • Choose the way you want to use your desired worksheets, then stay consistent throughout the school year.

  • Encourage independent work habits by having students try to complete the worksheets on their own first. It’s also helpful to suggest options for students who need extra assistance, such as asking a friend or two before going to the teacher.

  • Be sure to incorporate time to review the worksheets, especially considering some topics may be review from the previous year or brand-new concepts.
