This activity will help your students get to know arctic animals and learn about how they depend on seasonal camouflage to survive. Students will pick one arctic animal and research fun facts about it. Print out this guided worksheet to use with the activity.
First, students will choose an arctic animal from your class list. If you prefer, you can assign an animal to each student to ensure variety. Here are some ideas:
After choosing their arctic animal, students will work through the questions in the guided activity.
They will first define camouflage in order to understand how it plays a role in the animal's survival.
Second, they will identify the animal's classification as a mammal, bird, reptile, fish, or amphibian.
Then, students will determine whether the animal's fur or feathers change seasonally or remain white throughout the year.
Next, students will describe the animal as a predator, prey, or both.
Students will then list three advantages the animal's white coat provides in its arctic habitat.
Finally, students will include a picture of their arctic animal. You may want them to draw a picture or print one out from a trusted online source.
