Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Bring on the excitement with this fun pie-themed craft and fraction activity!
Materials:
plain paper plates (1 for each kid)
markers, crayons, or colored pencils
rulers
cotton balls (3-4 for each kid) (optional)
glue
Step 1: Design the Pie
First, students will use brown and orange crayons, markers, or colored pencils to create a pie. Color the edge of the paper plate brown to make the pie crust. Then color the inside part of the plate shades of orange to serve as the pumpkin pie filling.
Step 2: Fraction Review
Use this time to review fractions with your class. Ask students to brainstorm how they would cut their pie - thirds, fourths, sixths, or eighths. You may wish to draw examples of each fraction on the board for students to reference.
Step 3: Divide into Fractions
Next, each kid will split their own pie into fractions. Ask your students to decide how many pieces they would like to cut their pie into. Once kids have decided how to divide their pies into even pieces, invite them to use the rulers to draw straight lines on the plate. After the lines are drawn, remind students to label each slice with the correct fraction.
