What's not to love about a free printable activity that teaches kids about grammar and is actually fun?! We've put together a simple, creative exercise that will help your students practice basic parts of speech in a context that is easy for them to understand. This activity is ideal for first, second, third, and fourth grade learners.
To do the Grammar Garden activity with your students, first you'll need to print out the Grammar Garden PDF file. Be sure to provide a copy of the Grammar Garden Picture and Parts of Speech Table to each of your students. You can choose either a black and white version or a full color version.
Before the activity begins, you will need to decide how many words in each part of speech category your students will be responsible for labeling on their Grammar Garden picture. (We recommend three words for each part of speech.) Here's how the activity works:
Students will choose three nouns, three verbs, three pronouns, and three adjectives to label their Grammar Garden. Here's an example:
This student used words from each part of speech to identify what he saw in the picture. Here's another example:
Another student used completely different words from each part of speech to identify what he saw in the picture. Both students would be correct!
In addition to labeling the Grammar Garden picture, the student should fill out his Parts of Speech Table with the nouns, verbs, pronouns, and adjectives he used. By sorting the words into the table correctly, the student demonstrates his understanding of each part of speech.
